▶Context & Source Read
·V.K. Two things drove the day. First, optimism about Meta's Muse: agentic AI needs far more CPU than earlier AI, which lifted AMD, ARM and INTC ahead of Meta's Connect conference. Second, hope that this week's UN General Assembly could cool Middle East tensions.
·V.K. Under the surface, breadth was narrow. The equal-weight S&P and the Russell 2000 trailed the Nasdaq by a wide margin, and many stocks set new 52-week lows. Energy, cable/telecom, transports, chemicals, insurance, consumer staples and managed care all lagged.
·H.S. Chips and software rose together, which is rare. The SPX climbed all day without a pullback and is nearing its all-time high again.
·V.K. Fed speakers sounded hawkish. Goolsbee warned that fighting inflation 'won't be painless', and Musalem said more tightening will be needed. The market still prices about 33bp of rate hikes across the year's last two meetings.
·Transports fell on an up day: UPS -4.4%, UNP -3.5% and CSX -2.4%.

V.K.
Stocks saw strong gains for two main reasons: Muse/CPU bullishness and hope that Middle East tensions could cool following this week’s UN General Assembly in NY.
The equal-weight S&P and R2K both underperformed the Nasdaq by a fairly wide margin, and a lot of stocks set new 52-week lows.
Brent dropped ~360bp to ~$100, extending its losses from Wed-Fri of last week, despite a weekend of negative developments including the Houthi attack on Saudi cities and the massive Ukraine drone/missile strike on Russia.
H.S.
Hammerstone says the SPX pushed higher all day with no dips/pullbacks, approaching all-time highs once again (around 7,816)
Even software participated, which Hammerstone calls a rare feat when chips and software bounce together.
U.S. WTI crude settled at $95.78/bbl, down $4.52, or 4.51%, to its lowest in over 2 weeks on hopes for diplomatic progress on the Iran war at this week's UN meeting, and energy majors XOM, CVX, and COP were notably lower.

The composite subtracts the benchmark's return rather than dividing by it: dividing breaks when the benchmark return is near zero and inverts when it is negative. VARS uses the ATR as it stood on each historical bar, not today’s ATR.

Muse/CPU bullishness powers chips and Meta
Tech led the day: the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) rose 2.86%, compared with 1.55% for the S&P 500 (SPY). V.K. credits Muse/CPU bullishness. Its argument is that agentic AI's heavier CPU needs lifted AMD, ARM and INTC alongside Meta ahead of Meta's Connect conference.
▶
Context & Source Read
·Meta Platforms (META) rose 11.3% to $741.25. Chips surged: ARM +17.2%, INTC +12.1%, AMD +9.9% to $615.52 and QCOM +9.3%.
·V.K. Because agentic AI is much more CPU-intensive than earlier versions of the technology, Muse optimism fueled gains in AMD, ARM and INTC ahead of Meta's Connect conference, where Zuckerberg's keynote is Wednesday night.
·Technology (XLK) and Communication (XLC) led, and opticals rose on positive commentary. Separately, CIEN was upgraded to Outperform at Evercore ISI, with its target raised to $550 from $375.
·H.S. Software participated alongside chips, which is a rare feat when chips and software bounce together.
·Software gainers included Twilio (TWLO) +9.1%, Cloudflare (NET) +8.7%, Shopify (SHOP) +7.3% and AppLovin (APP) +7.2%.

Crude slides on UN diplomacy hopes; energy lags
WTI crude (USO) fell 3.68% and settled at its lowest level in over two weeks. The driver was hope that this week's UN meeting brings diplomatic progress on Middle East tensions. Refiners and oil majors led energy lower, and longer-dated Treasury yields ticked down from recent 20-year highs.
▶
Context & Source Read
·WTI settled at $95.78/bbl, down $4.52 (4.51%). Brent dropped ~360bp to ~$100, adding to its losses from Wednesday to Friday of last week.
·V.K. Oil fell despite a weekend of negative developments, including the Houthi attack on Saudi cities and the massive Ukraine drone/missile strike on Russia. Investors hope the UN General Assembly could help ease Middle East tensions.
·Refiners fell hardest: Marathon Petroleum (MPC) -5.3%, Valero (VLO) -4.8% and Phillips 66 (PSX) -4.2%. ConocoPhillips (COP) fell 3.3%, ExxonMobil (XOM) 3.2% and Chevron (CVX) 2.8%.
·Treasury yields, which hit 20-year highs in recent days, eased slightly. The 10-year note was at 4.962% (-0.033), 10- and 30-year yields dipped 4bp, and the 2-year finished flat.
·V.K. Fed speakers leaned hawkish. Goolsbee said the central bank can't simply look past ongoing supply shocks, and Musalem warned further tightening will be needed. Market pricing held fairly steady at ~33bp of hikes over the year's final two meetings.
·Gold (GLD) fell 0.7% and silver (SLV) fell 0.5%.

The read

Monday was a narrow but violent risk-on day. The Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) ripped +2.86% to 742.10, the S&P 500 (SPY) added +1.55% to 773.50, and the Russell 2000 (IWM) managed only +0.58% to 285.75. The Nasdaq Composite logged its first record close since June and the Dow added roughly 366 points, per Yahoo Finance. Read the gap between those three ETF moves before you read the headlines: this was a mega-cap and semiconductor squeeze layered on an oil-driven relief bid, not a broad re-rating. And it came five days after the Fed hiked for the first time in more than three years, which is the part of the story the tape is choosing to ignore.

What actually moved the tape

  • Meta's Muse became the AI story again. Less than two weeks after launch, Meta's Muse personal-agent app topped Apple's App Store ahead of ChatGPT and Claude, per Yahoo Finance and The Motley Fool. Wells Fargo lifted its target to $796, and the stock ran +11.3% to $741.25 heading into Meta Connect this week.
  • The second-order trade was CPUs, not just GPUs. Bloomberg and 24/7 Wall St. framed the chip rally as a bet that agents are CPU-hungry: Arm +17.2%, Intel +12.1%, AMD +9.9% to a record $615.52 (clearing a $1 trillion market cap for the first time), Qualcomm +9.3%. Bloomberg had the Philadelphia semiconductor index up roughly 4% for a fifth straight gain. Intel also still carries last week's Reuters report that SK Hynix is weighing U.S. memory production at Intel's Ohio site.
  • Washington-Beijing optics. Thursday's Trump-Xi state dinner is set to seat Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Satya Nadella and Tim Cook, and Treasury Secretary Bessent floated a U.S.-China AI dialogue with an incident-notification mechanism. Traders are pricing a thaw in chip-trade policy before a word of it is signed.

Macro: the Fed is hiking and equities are shrugging

Last Wednesday the FOMC voted 12-0 to lift the funds rate to 3.75%-4.00%, with 16 of 18 officials penciling in another hike and year-end PCE inflation projected at 3.7%, per CNBC and Schwab. Chair Warsh called inflation 'too high ... for too long.' On Friday the 10-year Treasury backed up to about 5.00% and the 2-year hit a cycle high above 4.74% (Saxo); Monday's relief came as yields slipped alongside crude.

That is the core tension. Tech is rallying on multiple expansion from a compressed base: Truist's Keith Lerner notes the sector's forward P/E has fallen from roughly 32x to 21x while its forward earnings growth still leads the market. But real yields near two-decade highs (Saxo puts the 10-year real yield at 2.67%) cap how far that can run. Gold (GLD) slipped -0.70% and silver (SLV) -0.50%, consistent with real rates, not fear, steering the metals.

Oil, energy and the transports split

WTI crude (USO) fell -3.68%, extending a fourth straight losing session. Saxo and Yahoo Finance cite Strait of Hormuz flows at a six-month high per U.S. Central Command, Saudi Arabia restoring its East-West pipeline, and Trump saying he would probably be open to meeting Iran's President Pezeshkian at this week's UN General Assembly.

The energy complex bled. Refiners (Marathon Petroleum -5.3%, Valero -4.8%, Phillips 66 -4.2%) led producers (ConocoPhillips -3.3%, Exxon -3.2%, Chevron -2.8%) lower, while American Airlines caught a fuel bid at +4.7%. But transports did not trade as one block: Union Pacific -3.5%, CSX -2.4% and UPS -4.4% sold off on a risk-on day. Cheaper diesel is not rescuing freight, and that is a demand signal worth respecting.

Positioning and sentiment: the contrarian setup

The most interesting data is the split between retail mood and institutional money. AAII's survey for the week to Sept. 16 showed bears at 53.3% and bulls at 28.8%, the weakest bullish reading in a year. In that same week, BofA's EPFR-based flow report showed $62.1 billion into equity funds, the biggest weekly inflow in three months, against a $59.5 billion money-market outflow and the largest high-yield bond outflow in six months.

Cash is moving into stocks while individuals are gloomy and credit is being trimmed. That is fuel for a near-term squeeze. The credit outflow is the tell to watch if this turns out to be a crowded chase into a handful of AI names.

Cross-currents the curated sections might miss

  • Crypto woke up. Bitcoin pushed back above $85,000, its best level since January, per Fortune and CoinDesk, despite last week's failed Senate vote on the Clarity Act. Strategy disclosed a 950-BTC purchase and rose +9.5%.
  • Greenland as a trade. Trump's announced U.S.-Denmark-Greenland security pact, due to be signed at the UN this week, sent Greenland-linked miners vertical; Critical Metals +38.6% on its heavy-rare-earth Tanbreez project.
  • Binary health-care events. GRAIL +33.7% after FDA staff briefing documents raised no major concerns ahead of Wednesday's advisory-panel vote on its Galleri multi-cancer blood test. Novo Nordisk -8% after a capital markets day heavy on long-dated blockbuster promises and light on near-term targets.
  • Media M&A. Warner Bros. Discovery +10.8% on reports Paramount reached a settlement framework with California over the merger, though other state attorneys general are still challenging it.
  • Data caution. We found no news to explain the Balchem print in the losers table (-85.7%); treat it as a probable data artifact until confirmed.
  • Europe is not joining in. The Stoxx 600 logged a third straight weekly decline into Friday, and the France-Germany 10-year spread widened past 104bp, a 14-year high (Saxo). U.S. tech is carrying this tape alone.

What to watch

AutoZone earnings Tuesday; flash PMIs and GRAIL's FDA panel Wednesday; the Trump-Xi summit and state dinner plus Costco earnings Thursday; Meta Connect; and a heavy Fed-speaker calendar all week. The bull case needs the summit to deliver something concrete on chips while crude keeps sliding. The bear case is that a hiking Fed and a 5% 10-year eventually reassert themselves on anything not named AI. Judging by the Russell's lag, that is already happening.

Sub-Theme Drill-Down

Semiconductors

The day's engine. Leadership rotated toward CPU and general-purpose compute designs on the thesis that consumer AI agents are CPU-intensive, a real broadening beyond the accelerator trade. A fifth straight gain into Thursday's policy summit raises sell-the-news risk if chip-trade relief doesn't materialize.

AI Infrastructure

A breakout consumer AI agent revived the data-center demand narrative that had been compressing multiples. Connectivity and custom-silicon suppliers ripped alongside, suggesting investors are again underwriting multi-year build-outs even with the 10-year Treasury near 5%.

Photonics

Compound-semiconductor substrate and silicon-photonics exposure caught strong bids as the agent story was extended to bandwidth. The move reads as a consensus long being topped up rather than a fresh discovery.

optics

Optical-module and interconnect names participated but lagged the high-speed connectivity chips, which took the lion's share of the move. More inference traffic implies more data-center bandwidth, but today the market preferred the silicon over the assemblers.

Out-of-Favor · Perking Up

Crypto-linked equities

Bitcoin's return above $85,000, its best level since January, came despite last week's failed Clarity Act vote, and treasury-company and miner equities outran the coin. After a long drawdown the group is trading like a high-beta liquidity proxy again.

Fuel-sensitive travel

Airlines, pummeled all year by war-driven fuel costs, caught a bid as crude fell for a fourth session on Iran diplomacy and six-month-high Hormuz flows. Durability depends entirely on the UN-week diplomacy headlines holding.

Application software

Beaten down on fears that AI would cannibalize seat-based models, app-layer and internet-infrastructure software joined the rally as agents were reframed as a usage tailwind. The recovery is early and still trails chips by a wide margin.

Cancer-screening diagnostics

A favorable FDA staff review ahead of Wednesday's panel on a multi-cancer blood test reignited a long-dormant early-detection theme. It is binary on the vote, but a positive outcome would re-rate the whole screening category.

Vital Knowledge · V.K.
  • Tech-led gains; long-end yields dip
    SPX +114.3 points/149bp, equal-weight S&P +57bp, Dow +367 points/71bp, Nasdaq +599 points/226bp, and R2K +14.9 points/52bp. Treasuries were mixed, with 2-year yields finishing flat while 10 and 30-year yields dipped 4bp.
  • METAAMDARMMuse/CPU bullishness drove the tape
Stocks saw strong gains for two main reasons: Muse/CPU bullishness and hope that Middle East tensions could cool following this week’s UN General Assembly in NY. Meta shares were among the best performing in the entire market, and because agentic AI is much more CPU intensive than prior iterations of the technology, Muse optimism fueled gains in AMD, ARM, and INTC ahead of Meta’s Connect Conf. (Zuckerberg’s keynote is Wed night).
  • Oil slumps despite weekend escalation
Brent dropped ~360bp to ~$100, extending its losses from Wed-Fri of last week, despite a weekend of negative developments including the Houthi attack on Saudi cities and the massive Ukraine drone/missile strike on Russia. Investors hope the UN General Assembly could help ease Middle East tensions; energy underperformed, while gold sank ~75bp and bitcoin surged 680bp (to ~$86.6K).
  • Fed speakers lean hawkish
Fed expectations held fairly steady, with the market pricing in ~33bp worth of rate hikes over the course of the year’s final two meetings. Chicago Fed President Goolsbee said the central bank can’t simply look past ongoing supply shocks and warned combating inflation “won’t be painless”, while St. Louis Fed President Musalem warned further monetary tightening will be needed.
  • Narrow breadth under the surface
The equal-weight S&P and R2K both underperformed the Nasdaq by a fairly wide margin, and a lot of stocks set new 52-week lows. Underperformance spanned energy, cable/telecom, transports, chemicals, insurance, consumer staples, and managed care.
  • HPQCFMOSHPQ and fertilizer names sink
HPQ slumped after providing a downbeat forecast for C27 PC unit sales, saying it anticipates PC unit volumes falling ~5% in C27. Fertilizer stocks CF, MOS, and NTR sank after Trump said the US was nearing a “massive” potash supply deal w/Belarus with pricing “substantially less” than what is currently being paid for Canadian potash.
Hammerstone · H.S.
  • Stocks surge toward record highs
The S&P 500 rose 114.30 (1.49%) to 7,764, the Nasdaq 599.55 (2.26%) to 27,122, DJ Industrials 367.62 (0.71%) to 52,050, and the Russell 2000 14.96 (0.52%) to 2,875. Hammerstone says the SPX pushed higher all day with no dips/pullbacks, approaching all-time highs once again (around 7,816), while the Nasdaq sits not far off its all-time high of 27,190.21 from June 1st.
  • METAINTCAMDChips, opticals and META lead
Technology (XLK) and Communication (XLC) led, with big gains in META ahead of its developers forum this week, opticals on positive commentary, and a massive surge in chip stocks, with INTC, AMD, ARM and others pacing the gains. Even software participated, which Hammerstone calls a rare feat when chips and software bounce together.
  • XOMCVXCOPOil slide eases yields; energy lags
U.S. WTI crude settled at $95.78/bbl, down $4.52, or 4.51%, to its lowest in over 2 weeks on hopes for diplomatic progress on the Iran war at this week's UN meeting, and energy majors XOM, CVX, and COP were notably lower. Treasury yields, which hit 20-year highs the last few days, saw a modest downtick, with the 10-Year Note at 4.962% (-0.033).
  • COINHOODMSTRCrypto-linked names extend rally
COIN, HOOD, MSTR and other Bitcoin-related movers extended last week’s rally after Bitcoin touched $86,330, its highest level since January 29. Prices jumped last week after the SEC on 9/17 granted a 5-year conditional exemption from registration so that certain exchanges and liquidity providers can offer tokenized equities in the US.
  • GRALRBLXCIENStandout single names
GRAL shares surged over 30% after the WSJ noted an outside FDA advisory committee will review Grail's multi-cancer early detection test. RBLX jumped after JPM said engagement inflected higher, with peak platform concurrent users reaching 28.7M on Saturday, and CIEN was upgraded to Outperform at Evercore ISI with its target raised to $550 from $375.
▶Context & Source Read
·V.K. The rally was narrow: Nasdaq +226bp against equal-weight S&P +57bp and R2K +52bp, with many names setting new 52-week lows. This was a leadership story, not a breadth story.
·V.K. Oil is the swing factor in the macro read. Bulls argue a sustained drop would bring lower rates, cooler inflation and a less hawkish Fed; bears say even a détente with Iran can’t erase the inflationary fallout from >$100 Brent and >$6 diesel.
·V.K. The AI tape is two-sided: Muse/CPU enthusiasm powered the day, but negative headlines are piling up, including the Anthropic IPO delay, the SB Energy IPO delay, a huge OpenAI cash burn number, Oracle data center debt issues and the new Texas data center restriction.
·H.S. Hammerstone reads the day as rate-hike fears already “in the rear view mirror,” driven by lower oil and a dip in bond yields rather than any major news. Wall Street remains optimistic ahead of the Trump/Xi summit later this week.

  • Closing Bell: Oil Down, Nasdaq at a Record
U.S. stocks rallied Monday as falling oil eased inflation pressure and Meta’s Muse app brought buyers back to AI, with the Nasdaq closing at a record. Crude fell 4.3%, leaving energy behind. Attention now turns to a Thursday night meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with AI leaders including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hoping to talk AI and trade.
  • METAAMDINTCAfter the Bell: Meta’s Muse Sets Off a Chip Rally
Meta’s personal AI agent Muse reached the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store nearly two weeks after its Sept. 8 launch, and Wells Fargo raised its Meta price target to $796. META closed +11.4%, its best day since 2025, and investors carried the enthusiasm into chipmakers that could supply the CPUs needed to run AI agents: AMD gained +10% and INTC rose +12.1%. RIP notes the app has yet to prove how much people will pay to use it, and Amazon has blocked the agent from its store, according to Stocktwits.
  • AMDAMD Joins the $1 Trillion Club
AMD closed above $1T in market value for the first time, finishing +10% at $615.52, as investors bought into the idea that popular AI agents will require more server CPUs. Bloomberg reported that Meta is AMD’s second-largest customer, accounting for about 5.5% of revenue, which gives AMD a clearer connection to Meta’s AI spending than many stocks caught in Monday’s rally.
  • WBDPSKYParamount Clears a Warner Bros. Merger Hurdle
Paramount Skydance settled the states’ antitrust lawsuit against its proposed Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition, valued at roughly $110B including debt. The deal still needs court approval. WBD closed +10.8% while PSKY fell -2.9% after reversing an early gain. Paramount must release 30 films annually for the first two years and 32 in each of the next three, with a $30M penalty per missed film and a requirement to divest Miramax if it falls short.
  • APPMRNARKLBPops: AppLovin, Moderna, Rocket Lab
APP rose +7.2% after Citi said AppLovin’s global e-commerce client count reached 13,105 through Sept. 18, up 5.1% in a week. MRNA rose +12.3% after three abstracts on its personalized cancer treatment were accepted for October’s ESMO meeting. RKLB rose +8.2% after Cantor Fitzgerald reiterated its $122 price target, pointing to the planned Neutron debut and the pending Iridium acquisition.
  • MSTRStrategy Resumes Bitcoin Buys
MSTR rose +9.5% after Strategy disclosed a purchase of 950 bitcoin, its first in more than two weeks, as bitcoin climbed back above $85,000.
▶Context & Source Read
·One theme tied the day together: AI agents. Muse’s App Store climb brought back the chip trade on the idea that agents need more server CPUs, so META, AMD and INTC rose together.
·RIP Downloads are an early signal, not proof. Muse has yet to show how much people will pay, and its app-store rank does not establish how many more chips Meta will buy.
·Stocktwits sentiment did not follow price. The META pulse was bearish despite the rally, and so were APP and MRNA despite their gains. AMD’s room was bullish on the $1T milestone, and PSKY was neutral as traders debated what the settlement would cost.
·RIP On the Warner deal, RIP’s read is that Warner shareholders got a clearer path to closing while Paramount shareholders got the bill for some of that certainty.
·On deck tomorrow: Fed speakers Williams (10:05 AM ET), Jefferson (10:20 AM ET) and Barkin (1:00 PM ET); AZO and THO report before the open and KBH after the close. Wednesday brings Meta Connect, and Thursday night brings the Trump–Xi meeting.
