SpaceX and Super Micro revive the AI trade while telecom sinks on Starlink fears

  • QQQ (+0.53%) outpaced SPY (+0.24%) while IWM slipped 0.12%, as investors rotated back into Technology (XLK +1.68%) and Industrials (XLI +0.91%) and recent defensive leaders — Healthcare, Consumer Staples, Utilities — lagged.
  • SPCX (+7.8%) reported Q3 revenue of $14.6B (+161% YoY) vs. est. $12.72B plus $4.4B in net income, and SMCI (+9.5%) guided Q1 revenue to $18.5B–$19.5B vs. prior guidance of $14.5B–$15.5B.
  • Security software names moved on the 'PHP2Shell' PHP vulnerabilities, which took major US and European websites dark as operators raced to protect their systems — OKTA +7.5%, CRWD +5.3%; OpenAI said Frontier AI found the flaws before attackers did and committed $1B in subsidized access for defenders.
  • Cable and telecom were hit hard — T -6.4%, TMUS -2.5%, VZ -2.2%, CMCSA -1.3% — even though AT&T beat on EPS (65c vs. 60c) and revenue ($32.3B vs. $31.7B) and tweaked its full-year EPS/EBITDA guide higher.
  • Earnings split the tape: DHR +4.3% on a Q3 EPS beat ($2.11 vs. $1.92) and a higher full-year guide, while NFLX -5.3% tumbled on earnings, ISRG -2.3% fell as U.S. procedure growth of +10% missed the ~+12% buy-side bar, and CMG -5.2% dropped after a TD Cowen downgrade.
  • The 10-year ended near 5.145% and the 2-year ticked up ahead of the Oct. 27–28 FOMC and next week's PCE; Brent whipsawed — briefly above $111 — before finishing near $109, WTI settled at $97.15 (-$0.67; USO -0.5%), December gold rose to $4,150 (GLD +0.34%), and bitcoin rose about 2%.
▶Context & Source Read
·V.K. SPCX's earnings and SMCI's upside preannouncement gave beleaguered AI sentiment much-needed support, with pick-and-shovel names doing particularly well.
·H.S. The AI trade revived 'for today at least' — META's results, spending and commentary tonight can quickly change things.
·V.K. The cable/telecom selloff was less about AT&T's results than about SpaceX/Starlink Mobile competition concerns.
·V.K. SpaceX's 10GW objective would cost ~$500B at current build rates against ~$150B of consensus SPCX revenue next year, and most people see rallies as something to fade rather than chase.
·The averages pulled back in the final hour as oil stocks jumped and yields edged higher.

RSRS is a percentile rank of an IBD-style weighted composite (40% three-month, 20% each at six, nine and twelve months) measured against the benchmark. The composite subtracts the benchmark's return rather than dividing by it: dividing breaks when the benchmark return is near zero and inverts when it is negative. VARS uses the ATR as it stood on each historical bar, not today’s ATR.

Rotation back into tech as the AI trade revives
Investors rotated back into Technology and Industrials while the recent defensive leaders lagged. QQQ (+0.53%) beat SPY (+0.24%) and IWM slipped 0.12%. The catalysts were SpaceX's quarter and Super Micro's upside preannouncement, which sent SPCX up 7.8% and SMCI up 9.5%.
▶
Context & Source Read
·XLK rose 1.68% and XLI rose 0.91%. Healthcare (XLV), Consumer Staples (XLP) and Utilities (XLU), which have led in recent weeks, lagged.
·SPCX reported Q3 revenue of $14.6B (+161% YoY) against an estimate of $12.72B, plus $4.4B in net income.
·SMCI guided Q1 revenue to $18.5B-$19.5B, up from prior guidance of $14.5B-$15.5B.
·V.K. SPCX's results and SMCI's preannouncement gave much-needed support to beleaguered AI sentiment, and pick-and-shovel names did particularly well.
·V.K. SpaceX's 10GW objective would cost about $500B at current build rates, against about $150B of consensus SPCX revenue next year. Most people see rallies as something to fade rather than chase.
·H.S. The pair revived the AI trade for today at least. Commentary, spending or results from META tonight could quickly change that.
·The averages pulled back in the final hour as oil stocks jumped and yields edged higher. The 10-year rose 3 bps to 5.145%.

The tape: a rotation inside growth, not a stampede

The headline numbers are modest: SPY +0.24%, QQQ +0.53%, IWM -0.12%. The internals were sharper. Money went to three places. First, AI hardware: Super Micro +9.5%, Dell +5.3%, and chips broadly firmer, with TradingKey counting 29 of 30 Philadelphia semiconductor index members higher. Second, security and observability software: Okta +7.5%, Datadog +6.5%, Cloudflare and CrowdStrike +5.3% each. Third, anything near Elon Musk. Small caps closed red while the megacap ETFs rose, which says the market is still paying for scale and AI exposure and selling the rest.

Two macro numbers the tape is ignoring

The 10-year Treasury yield sits around 5.1-5.15%. Brent pushed toward $110 after Yahoo Finance reported an attack on a Saudi Aramco field in the Eastern Region. That adds to at least 18 vessels hit in the Strait of Hormuz over two weeks, and US-Iran diplomacy has stalled: Pakistan's army chief went to Tehran, and a diplomat told Bloomberg that reports of an imminent deal were "inaccurate." BofA Global Research says a weekly Brent close above $110 puts $120-122 in play. Equities shrugged it off. GLD rose 0.34%, with spot gold near $4,150. USO actually fell 0.5%, so the front-month contract roll and an already-rich risk premium are moving oil as much as the headlines are.

CME FedWatch odds of a 25bp hike at next week's Oct. 27-28 FOMC were about 17%, down from about 22% a week earlier (via TipRanks). With fed funds at 3.50-3.75%, that is a live hiking debate the equity market is treating as background noise. MBA's 30-year mortgage rate printed 7.41%. The contrarian read: a rally on 5%+ long yields and $100+ crude only works if AI earnings keep outrunning the discount rate, and that leaves little margin for error.

SpaceX is now a cross-sector factor

This was the day's best second-order move. SpaceX (+7.8%) beat by a wide margin: revenue of $14.58B against about $12.94B expected, with the AI business now close to half of sales. Musk also confirmed that the SpaceX and Tesla boards have formed special committees to study a combination. JPMorgan expects a SpaceX-led all-stock deal at a premium of up to 35%.

The read-through hit telecom. AT&T fell 6.4% even though it beat and raised full-year EPS guidance, because postpaid phone adds (379k against about 387k consensus) slowed just as investors price in Starlink Mobile's 800 MHz spectrum and direct-to-cell plans. T-Mobile (-2.5%), Verizon (-2.2%) and Comcast (-1.3%) followed. AT&T's CEO told analysts not to "over-rotate" on SpaceX, and the market did anyway. Telecom has been a defensive place to hide for yield. If satellites become a terminal-value argument against it, that defensive role gets repriced.

Software's relief rally: AI needs guards

Two catalysts landed together. Patches shipped Wednesday for two critical PHP flaws, and several European government sites, including the Dutch portal Overheid.nl, went offline as a precaution. CrowdStrike also expanded its Nvidia partnership, pushing its controls down to the hardware layer to catch AI agents behaving dangerously. 24/7 Wall St. had the CIBR cybersecurity ETF up about 2% against roughly 0.5% for QQQ, a targeted rotation. MongoDB (+6.7%) and Palantir (+4.7%) joined in. After months of "AI eats software" fear, the market is picking out the categories AI agents create demand for: identity, observability and runtime security.

AI equity is up, AI credit is still nervous

The curated tape misses this split. Super Micro's pre-announcement was clear evidence of demand: fiscal Q1 revenue guided to $18.5-19.5B from $14.5-15.5B, and gross margin to 12-12.5%. At GTC Berlin, Nvidia showed a modular "DSX POD" data-center design that it says can cut deployment at ready sites from about six months to as little as 14 days. Meanwhile CoreWeave (-0.5%) sits near 17-month lows. Reuters has its five-year CDS above 1,000bp, Oracle's was 288bp last week, and a Volta Infrastructure debt deal stalled when buyers demanded more yield. Equity is pricing the demand; credit is pricing the financing. Watch whether the strength stays with capital-light hardware suppliers while leveraged GPU clouds stay shunned.

Crypto, the consumer, and positioning

Bitcoin rose about 2.4% to roughly $84.5k (Motley Fool), its highest in about two weeks. Two things helped: the OCC finalized its GENIUS Act stablecoin rules, and spot ETFs took in $527M on Monday, their biggest day since Sept. 22. Bitcoin-treasury stocks amplified the move: Strategy +7.5%, Strive +13.6%. The consumer was the weak spot. Netflix fell 5.3% on a light Q4 revenue guide and a cut to its 2026 ad-revenue target, from $3B to $2.7B. Chipotle fell 5.2% after a TD Cowen downgrade citing weak October sales. Booking fell 3.4% and Uber 1.9%. In health care, Danaher rose 4.3% on an EPS beat-and-raise. Intuitive Surgical recovered most of a roughly 13% after-hours drop to close down 2.3%; a $450M antitrust settlement had muddied an otherwise clean beat.

On positioning, BofA's October fund manager survey had cash at 3.9%, below its 4% contrarian sell trigger. The net tech overweight rose to 37%, and 45% named semiconductors the most crowded trade. Breadth is still the market's weak point: Goldman has called it the narrowest since the dot-com era, and the equal-weight S&P was about four points behind the cap-weighted index year to date as of early October. Today's red IWM fits that pattern.

What's next

After the close, Meta rose about 3-4% in extended trading on a revenue beat and a 2-for-1 split. Tesla beat (adjusted EPS $0.48 against $0.43) but got a mixed after-hours reception. Those two set Thursday's open. Further out:

  • The Oct. 27-28 FOMC, with a hike still a live possibility
  • Chipotle's Oct. 28 report, which will test the downgrade
  • The Nov. 3 midterms; a US official repeated that there are no plans to strike Iran before them
  • A possible Russia-Ukraine-US round around Nov. 10, with Putin offering to mediate between Washington and Tehran

The bull case is broadening earnings. The bear case is a rally carried by a shrinking set of names against 5%+ yields and $100+ crude.

Sub-Theme Drill-Down

Semiconductors

Chips led the growth tape with near-unanimous gains inside the group, bouncing from a summer support zone tested a day earlier. The catch: fund managers already name semis the most crowded trade, so this rally rests on positioning with little cash left to add.

AI Infrastructure

Server and system builders had the day's cleanest fundamental catalyst, a large guidance raise tied to AI platform demand, and power-for-AI names moved with them. The split to watch is equity against credit: hardware suppliers are being rewarded while bond and CDS markets keep shunning leveraged GPU-cloud operators.

Optics / Photonics

Optical networking and high-speed connectivity rebounded with the AI hardware complex, recovering some of the ground lost when the summer's co-packaged-optics adoption debate cooled the trade. No theme-specific catalyst appeared, so this looks like leverage to AI capex rather than a new thesis.

Out-of-Favor · Perking Up

Cybersecurity & identity software

These names were punished for months on fears that AI agents would erode seat-based software. They had their broadest up day in weeks on a live, widespread web vulnerability plus a chip-to-application AI security partnership. The story is shifting from AI victim to AI toll-collector.

Bitcoin-treasury & crypto equities

With bitcoin still about 27% below its 52-week high, the group was bid on final federal stablecoin rules, the biggest spot-ETF inflow day in a month, and a major bank adding bitcoin to its long-term return assumptions. It is still a leveraged bitcoin trade, but the regulatory backdrop just got clearer.

Life-science tools

A bellwether's beat-and-raise turned a premarket loss into a solid gain. That hints the multi-year hangover from customer destocking and weak biotech funding may be easing, and health care as a sector hit records earlier this week.

Vital Knowledge · V.K.
  • Index levels
Stocks saw gains on Wed: SPX +45 points/59bp, equal-weight S&P +35bp, Dow +361 points/69bp, R2K +7.6 points/27bp, and Nasdaq +278 points/105bp. Treasuries were mixed, with 2-year yields ticking up 3bp while 10 and 30-year yields ended about flat. Fed expectations held fairly steady, with the market still pricing in hikes in Dec and Mar.
  • SPCXSMCIAI sentiment gets a lift
For a change, tech outperformed. Positive earnings from SPCX and the upside preannouncement out of SMCI provided 'some much-needed support to beleaguered AI sentiment,' and pick-and-shovel names did particularly well. V.K. notes that SpaceX's 10GW objective would cost ~$500B at current build rates, while the consensus is modeling ~$150B in revenue for SPCX next year, and says most people are looking at rallies as something that should be faded instead of chased.
  • TCHTRVZCable/telecom hit on Starlink fears
Legacy cable and telecom stocks were hit hard, including CHTR, CMCSA, T, TMUS, and VZ. V.K. says this was not so much because AT&T earnings were terrible but because of SpaceX/Starlink Mobile competition concerns. AT&T actually reported solid upside on EPS (65c vs. the Street 60c) and revenue (+5.3% to $32.3B vs. the Street $31.7B), and the full-year EPS/EBITDA guide is tweaked higher.
  • UALDHRTMOEarnings winners
UAL saw a very strong gain as investors were impressed by its top line momentum and its reassurances about achieving a double-digit margin in 2027 despite a huge fuel headwind. Lab equipment/services performed well on favorable earnings. DHR reported Q3 EPS of $2.11 (vs. the Street $1.92) and tweaked up its full-year EPS guide. TMO reported EPS of $6.68 (vs. the Street $6.41) and organic revenue of +6% (vs. the Street +4.2%).
  • NFLXMHOCMGEarnings laggards
NFLX tumbled on earnings. MHO tumbled after a large shortfall on Q3 EPS ($2.56 vs. the Street $3.26). ABT, ELV, and ISRG all underperformed on earnings, and CMG was one of the weakest stocks in the SPX after a TD Cowen downgrade.
  • Oil whipsaw and geopolitics
Brent saw a lot of volatility. It briefly broke above $111 in the morning, then spiked again in the afternoon on the State Dept. Gulf departure order headline, which the State Dept. clarified covered only Saudi Arabia. It finished up small (+60bp or so to ~$109.50). Gold rallied 20bp, silver was about flat, and bitcoin spiked 210bp.
Hammerstone · H.S.
  • Rotation back into tech
U.S. stocks put in a solid day as investors rotated back into Technology (XLK +1.68%) and Industrials (XLI +0.91%). Defensive sectors that have led in recent weeks, such as Healthcare (XLV), Consumer Staples (XLP) and Utilities (XLU), lagged. The S&P 500 rose 45.15 (0.59%) to 7,757, the Nasdaq rose 278.04 (1.05%) to 26,702, and the Dow rose 361.22 (0.69%) to 52,857, though the averages pulled back in the final hour as oil stocks jumped and yields edged higher.
  • SPCXSMCIMETAAI trade revived, for today
SPCX reported $14.6B in Q3 revenue (+161% YoY) vs. est. $12.72B, plus $4.4B in net income. SMCI jumped after guiding Q1 revs to $18.5B-$19.50B vs. guidance of $14.5B-$15.50B. Together they helped revive the AI trade 'for today at least,' but Hammerstone warns that commentary/spending/results from META tonight can quickly change things.
  • CHKPCRWDZSPHP2Shell vulnerability
Major websites in the US and Europe went dark as operators raced to protect their systems from the 'PHP2Shell' vulnerabilities. These affect PHP, which nearly 70% of websites use, according to Cloudflare. OpenAI said Frontier AI found the flaws before attackers did and committed $1B in subsidized access for defenders. Hammerstone listed security software names CHKP, CRWD, ZS and OKTA under software sector movers on the WSJ report.
  • Rates and commodities
The U.S. 10-year yield rose 3 bps to 5.145%, and the 2-year hovered around 4.823%, up 3.8bps, ahead of the Fed's October 27-28 meeting and next week's PCE report. WTI settled at $97.15/bbl, down -$0.67, while Brent edged higher +$0.03 to $108.82 and December gold rose $7.40 to $4,150.00. Bitcoin rose over 2%, nearing $85,000 midday.
  • UALELVISRGEarnings standouts
UAL climbed after guiding Q4 unit revenue growth to accelerate from Q3's 15.9% to 20%+ y/y. ELV raised its annual profit forecast to at least $29 per share. ISRG tumbled because U.S. procedure growth of +10% fell short of buy-side consensus of ~+12%.

·V.K. V.K. puts the AI bounce inside a new era of more discerning capital markets. Musk's compute plans need enormous capex that will require incremental debt and/or equity, and the key swing factor for the space is whether Anthropic and OpenAI can come public on the terms bulls anticipated.

  • Closing Bell: Semis Lead, Defensives Lag
U.S. stocks climbed Wednesday after a volatile stretch for AI shares: semiconductors grabbed the lead at the open and buyers held it through the close, with SPY up 0.5%, DIA up 0.6%, QQQ up 1.1% and IWM up 0.3%. Seven of 11 sectors finished green. Technology led at +1.7%, powered by AMD and NVDA, while Communication Services lagged at -1.1% and defensives struggled, with Procter & Gamble and Eli Lilly among the blue-chip drags. Reuters reported that SpaceX's earnings and Super Micro's preliminary sales forecast revived enthusiasm for AI-linked stocks.
  • METAAfter the Bell: Meta Eats $9.9B and Rallies
META jumped 5.8% after hours on record third-quarter revenue of $64.6B, above the $63.37B estimate. Adjusted earnings were $7.40 per share, and Meta guided for $73B to $76B of fourth-quarter revenue. A $9.9B legal charge tied to social-media lawsuits pushed net income down to $9.8B and free cash flow to negative $2.1B, Meta's first negative quarter as a public company. Meta also lifted the bottom of its capital-spending range to $135B from $130B and created a new class of nonvoting shares to help fund its AI buildout.
  • TSLAIBMTesla's Cash Surprise, IBM's Deals Arrive
TSLA was up 3.8% after revenue of $28.05B and adjusted EPS of $0.48 against a $0.40 estimate. Free cash flow reached $1.53B versus expectations for a $4.92B outflow, because capex came in at $4.73B, roughly $2.8B below estimates, and Musk said on the call that SpaceX and Tesla were exploring a merger. IBM rallied 7.1% Wednesday night as roughly two-thirds of the mainframe deals that slipped last quarter closed in the third quarter: adjusted EPS of $2.95 beat the $2.85 expected, revenue of $17.1B topped the $16.82B estimate, and IBM raised the bottom of its full-year software growth outlook to 7% from 6%.
  • SMCILRCXChips: Super Micro Surges, Lam Sells Off on Records
SMCI surged 9.5% Wednesday on 2.2 times its recent volume. It raised its preliminary revenue forecast to $18.5B to $19.5B from $14.5B to $15.5B, and its expected gross-margin range to 12% to 12.5% from 10.4% to 10.8%. The figures are preliminary and unaudited, with full results due Nov. 3. LRCX sold off despite record quarterly revenue of $8.22B (up 22% sequentially), adjusted EPS of $2.20 and December-quarter guidance of $8.60B, plus or minus $400M, while Stocktwits sentiment stayed 79% bullish.
  • CRWDCrowdStrike Rides the PHP2Shell Scare
CRWD climbed 5.3% after announcing Falcon Guardian integrations with Nvidia's OpenShell runtime. Cybersecurity stocks rallied on a Wall Street Journal report that AI helped researchers find PHP2Shell, a critical flaw in software that powers up to 70% of the world's websites. The patch touched nearly 200 files and added more than 10,000 lines of code. CrowdStrike was not involved in finding or fixing the flaw.
  • AVEXTRKLBPops & Drops
AVEX fell 34.56% after reports said the Navy halted purchases of its GARC drone boats after spending $136.8M. T fell 6.45%: revenue rose 5.3% to $32.32B, but net income fell to $855M on a Mexico impairment, higher costs and interest expense. RKLB rose 5.44% after its spacecraft launched for Viasat's $81M NASA communications program.

·AI enthusiasm carried the tape. Semis led from the open, and the after-hours megacap prints (Meta, Tesla, IBM) all drew rallies despite blemishes: a $9.9B legal charge at Meta, and Tesla revenue essentially flat from last year.
·RIP Spending restraint was rewarded. Tesla's surprise free cash flow came from capex roughly $2.8B below estimates, though RIP cautions that lower AI and robotics spending cannot become the growth strategy forever.
·RIP Priced-for-perfection risk in the chip complex. Lam's record quarter still drew a selloff against a stock that entered Wednesday with expectations bolted to the ceiling. Super Micro's raised numbers stay preliminary and unaudited until Nov. 3.
·RIP Meta's ad engine is funding the AI buildout as capex rises to a $135B floor. RIP's read: the ads are paying for the party, for now.
·RIP PHP2Shell sharpens the cybersecurity case: when AI can uncover and weaponize bugs at machine speed, defenders need controls at machine speed too. That pitch was behind CrowdStrike's move.

U.S. stocks climbed Wednesday after a volatile stretch for AI shares. Semiconductors grabbed the lead at the open, buyers held it through the close, and megacap earnings took over once the bell rang.
Apparently, a record ad quarter can make Wall Street forgive one massive legal bill.
Free cash flow reached $1.53B versus expectations for a $4.92B outflow. The trick was spending less.
Roughly two-thirds of the mainframe deals that slipped last quarter closed during the third quarter, according to IBM CFO Jim Kavanaugh.
Selling more servers is good. Keeping more money from each one is the part shareholders have been waiting for.
Stocktwits sentiment remained 79% bullish despite the drop. The market’s message was colder: Records are nice. Surprise us again.
When AI can uncover and weaponize bugs at machine speed, defenders need controls running at machine speed, too.

Tech-led rebound with narrow breadth: QQQ +0.53% beat SPY +0.24% as the AI trade came back, while small caps slipped (IWM -0.12%).
  • SPCX's Q3 beat ($14.6B revenue vs. $12.72B est.) and SMCI's raised Q1 guide brought the AI trade back. Money moved into Technology (XLK +1.68%) and Industrials and out of the recent defensive leaders, but Hammerstone warns that META's results tonight could quickly undo it.
  • Starlink competition fears sank telecom (T -6.4%) even though AT&T beat. Meanwhile the 10-year sits near 5.145% and Brent near $109 heading into the Oct. 27–28 FOMC and next week's PCE, which leaves the rally little room for error.
