Anthropic's S-1 and fresh AI financing lift tech while Brazil plunges on Lula's win

  • Broad gains with tech in front: QQQ +1.28% to 713.43, SPY +0.75% to 765.64, IWM +0.45% to 276.99.
  • Technology, Consumer Discretionary and Industrials led as the AI trade bounced back after falling for several weeks on debt worries and the effect of high rates. Communications, Staples and Healthcare pulled back from recent 52-week highs.
  • Anthropic published its S-1, which keeps its IPO on track for before Thanksgiving. Meta announced plans to sell $95B of equity, and SpaceX confirmed a $40B GPU leasing deal with Apollo.
  • Brazilian stocks plunged after Lula won a fourth term in Sunday's runoff against Flávio Bolsonaro, overturning expectations of a shift to more conservative economic policy. XP -48.4%, Bradesco preferred -28%, Itau -20.4%, Petrobras -14%.
  • Deal flow: EQT will buy Range Resources in an all-stock deal valued at more than $50B, at 0.987 EQT shares per RRC share (RRC +17.7%). Surgery Partners rose 47.6% on a $5.7B take-private at $23.50 a share. Instacart (CART) gained 7.9% after the WSJ reported DoorDash is in advanced talks to acquire it.
  • Verizon fell 3.5% despite beating on earnings, raising full-year guidance and adding 406K postpaid phones, about double consensus.
▶Context & Source Read
·V.K. The AI community was despondent at Friday's close but ended Monday more confident than it has been in weeks. Investors liked what the S-1 showed on profitability, cash burn and customer concentration.
·V.K. Meta traded very well given the huge amount of new stock it plans to sell, and the raise signals it will keep spending aggressively on compute. Together with SpaceX's financing and Anthropic's S-1, that drove a solid advance in pick-and-shovel stocks.
·Neocloud and data center stocks swung after Elon Musk warned on X that debt markets have shut off funding for AI data center operators without independent revenue. The group was weak early but rebounded as software stocks sold off.
·Crude dipped on Saudi–Iran diplomacy: WTI settled at $101.76 (-1.46%) and Brent at $115.81 (USO -1.95%). December gold settled at $4,038.40 (GLD +0.33%). The 10-year yield was down 1bp at 4.978%, and the $69B 2-year auction came in soft.
·V.K. Brent remains very elevated, and the consensus expects a renewed bombing campaign on Iran after the U.S. midterms, if not sooner. Wednesday's FOMC is expected to hold rates but leave the door open to a December hike, and markets already price hikes in December and March.

V.K.
The AI community was despondent at the Fri close, but bulls ended Monday more confident than they've been in a few weeks, and the big shot in the arm came from Anthropic.
The stock traded very well considering the huge amount of fresh supply, and the money signals that Meta intends to keep spending extremely aggressively on compute.
At Wednesday's FOMC decision (2pmET), policy is widely expected to stay unchanged with the door left wide open for a hike in Dec; markets already price a hike in Dec and Mar.
H.S.
Technology (XLK), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Industrials (XLI) led as the AI trade bounced back after tumbling the prior few weeks on debt concerns and high rates impacts.
Brazilian stocks plunged after Lula secured a fourth term in Sunday's runoff, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro.
He predicted 'guppy-level death and consolidation' among more than 200 neoclouds.

The tape: AI funding news, not AI demand news, set the tone

Monday was a clean up day with a tech accent: SPY +0.75% to 765.64, QQQ +1.28% to 713.43, IWM +0.45% to 276.99. Press closes had the Dow up only about 0.3% as energy gave back ground. The headline catalyst was Anthropic's S-1 for a Nasdaq listing under "ANT". Coverage of the filing (Yahoo Finance's live blog, BetaNews, The VC Corner) highlights first-half 2026 revenue of roughly $16.3B against about $1.2B a year earlier, alongside a very large, mostly non-cash net loss. Motley Fool's wrap put it plainly: hard revenue from a frontier lab eased the "AI boom is losing steam" fear that had dogged tech for weeks. Tesla (+5.2%) added a second leg on a Barclays upgrade to Overweight (target $450) citing SpaceX ties and robotaxi.

That relief landed on a beaten-down tape. Per Benzinga's Oct 19 recap, the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell eight straight sessions from Oct 7 to Oct 16 (about -15.7%), a streak drawing 2008 comparisons. Investrade's Monday review has the SOX up more than 3%, back above 11,000, yet still roughly 12% lower for October. Read today as a repair rally in the most-punished corner of the market rather than a new leg, and note the shape: QQQ beat IWM by more than 80bp and the Dow lagged. Leadership is still narrow. The laggards were defensive and media-heavy: Communication Services, Staples and Health Care, with Verizon -3.5% despite an EPS beat and raised guidance, and FICO -13.2% on a Wells Fargo downgrade tied to mortgage-score pricing.

The angle the curated sections miss: AI is becoming an equity-supply story

Three items point the same way. Anthropic is coming to market at a valuation investors reportedly mark around $1.5T (FT-cited coverage; its last private round was about $965B in May). Meta slipped about 1.9% on a reported plan to raise up to roughly $95B of equity for AI infrastructure (Motley Fool, Investrade), following Alphabet's roughly $85B raise earlier this year. And Investrade relays remarks attributed to Elon Musk that debt markets have largely closed to data-center operators with no other revenue, even as SpaceX reportedly lined up $40B of GPU debt.

The second-order read: the AI build-out is migrating from hyperscaler free cash flow to external capital: new shares, IPO paper and high-yield debt (CoreWeave's bonds were quoted near 15% in mid-October, per Benzinga). That is bullish for the picks-and-shovels supply chain that gets paid either way, and today's tape agreed. It is dilutive for owners of the spenders, though, and a multi-hundred-billion-dollar pipeline of new AI paper competes for the same dollars that bid up the incumbents. Watch whether IPO demand pulls money out of the megacaps, not just into the theme.

Rates: the ceiling hasn't moved

Equities rallied without help from bonds. The 10-year sat just under 5% (roughly 4.97-4.99% across CNBC and Investrade), the 2-year near 4.71% and the 30-year near 5.30%, and a $69B 2-year auction tailed slightly. One flows analysis notes the 10-year hit a 2026 high of 5.31% on Oct 5, so the three-week slide is real but incomplete. The FOMC meets Tuesday and Wednesday under Chair Kevin Warsh. CME FedWatch shows over 90% odds of a hold at 3.75%-4.00%, but one futures-implied analysis (FatTail) puts roughly 81% odds on the policy rate ending the year above the current range. That is a tightening bias, not an easing one, and it caps how far long-duration growth multiples can re-expand. Thursday's GDP and PCE, plus ECB and BOJ decisions, make this the densest macro week of the quarter.

Brazil: a violent repricing that stayed contained

The day's largest dispersion came from Sao Paulo. Lula won Sunday's runoff 51.8% to 48.2% over Flavio Bolsonaro, who has not conceded; markets had priced a Bolsonaro win and fiscal tightening. Per Al Jazeera and Reuters-based reports, the real fell 10-12% against the U.S. dollar, the Bovespa dropped 10% fast enough to trigger B3's circuit breaker and a 30-minute halt, and Brazil's Treasury cancelled its Oct 27 and Oct 29 bond auctions (Quartz). The U.S.-listed complex showed it: XP -48.4%, Bradesco preferred -28%, Itau -20.4%, Nu -17%, Petrobras -14%, MercadoLibre -7.8%.

The underappreciated detail is which non-bank names fell hardest: the privatized utilities Sabesp (-26.1%) and COPEL (-19.6%). That suggests investors are pricing reversal or interference risk for the privatization agenda, not just a weaker currency. The cleaner signal for U.S. traders is the absence of contagion: U.S. indices rose, and Lipper data via Reuters showed Asian equity funds taking $11.5B in the week to Oct 21, their largest inflow since at least 2022. EM is a dispersion trade right now, not a risk-off trade.

Oil, gold and the Middle East premium

Crude eased but stays elevated. Investrade has WTI near $101.8 (-1.5%) and Brent near $115.8, both close to six-month highs; our USO gauge fell 1.95%. Saudi pipeline flows recovering toward 80% of capacity and Riyadh-Tehran diplomacy are trimming the premium, while continued attacks on Gulf shipping keep a floor under it (Barchart estimates about $24/bbl of conflict premium). Gold edged up (GLD +0.33%, futures near $4,030) and silver was flat (SLV -0.12%). A softer oil print is quietly helpful heading into PCE.

Flows and positioning

Global equity funds drew $28.2B in the week to Oct 21, a fifth straight week of inflows (Lipper/Reuters), with U.S. funds taking about $5.1B. Money did not leave during the chip rout; it rotated. BlackRock's Q3 flows review flagged investors trimming leveraged long ETFs and adding inverse products late in the quarter, a positioning cushion that helps explain sharp up-days like this one. Crypto appetite is softer: Ether ETFs logged roughly $1.1B of October outflows through Oct 20.

Bottom line

A legitimate up day built on AI relief, M&A animal spirits (EQT's all-stock deal for Range Resources, a take-private premium for Surgery Partners, reported DoorDash-Instacart talks) and a modest oil give-back. The risk is that the week's real tests (Warsh's tone Wednesday, Microsoft/Alphabet/Amazon earnings, Thursday's PCE) arrive with the 10-year still one bad print from 5%.

Sub-Theme Drill-Down

Photonics

The day's cleanest leadership. Laser and optical-component makers outran the broader chip rebound, helped by fresh bullish sell-side coverage, as the market keeps treating data-center bandwidth as the least-debatable line in AI capex: it gets funded whether the money comes from cash flow, new equity or IPO proceeds.

optics

Optical networking systems and transceivers rode the same bid. The read-through from today's financing headlines is that more AI capacity spread across more sites means more data-center interconnect, so the group trades as a beneficiary of the build-out regardless of who ends up paying for it.

Semiconductors

A broad repair rally after an eight-session October rout, with analog/industrial, memory and compute all participating, which reads as relief plus short-covering rather than a new earnings catalyst. With the index still roughly 12% lower for the month, the burden of proof shifts to this week's hyperscaler capex commentary.

AI Infrastructure

Power, grid equipment and onsite-generation names rallied with the AI relief, but financing is now the fault line: reported mega equity raises by hyperscalers and strained debt markets for neoclouds mean balance-sheet strength, not just AI exposure, is what is being priced.

Out-of-Favor · Perking Up

Neoclouds / AI compute lessors

The most-punished AI subgroup, with junk-bond yields near 15% earlier this month, whipsawed on financing headlines and then caught a late-session rebound as money rotated out of software. Early and fragile; their bond prices are the better tell than the equities.

Real estate / rate-sensitive yield

Real Estate was among the sectors investors favored as the 10-year held just under 5% after a three-week slide. If Wednesday's Fed doesn't revive hike fears, rate-sensitive income plays have room to re-rate, though homebuilders were still under pressure today.

  • Broad gains across the indexes
    SPX +53 points/70bp, equal-weight S&P +36bp, Dow +148 points/29bp, Nasdaq +214 points/82bp, and R2K +10.5 points/38bp. Treasuries were mixed: 2-year yields ticked up 2bp while 10 and 30-year yields fell 2 and 3bp, respectively. Brent fell ~70bp after surging ~7% over Thurs and Fri, gold rose 45bp, silver finished flat and bitcoin dropped 60bp (to $79.88K).
  • Anthropic S1 lifts AI sentiment
The AI community was despondent at the Fri close, but bulls ended Monday more confident than they've been in a few weeks, and the big shot in the arm came from Anthropic. Publishing the S1 keeps the IPO on track to arrive before Thanksgiving, although the company still needs to convince investors to hand over ~$100B+ at a >$1.5T valuation. Investors were heartened by the S1 details around profitability, cash burn, and customer concentration.
  • METASPCXMeta raise and SpaceX financing fuel pick-and-shovel names
Meta announced plans to sell $95B worth of equity. The stock traded very well considering the huge amount of fresh supply, and the money signals that Meta intends to keep spending extremely aggressively on compute. SpaceX confirmed in an 8K that it closed on a $40B GPU leasing deal w/Apollo, and together with Anthropic these events sparked a decent advance in tech, especially pick-and-shovel stocks.
  • Rotation: tech and capital goods up; payments, software and housing lag
Tech, data center-linked capital goods, aerospace/defense, brokers/trust banks/asset managers, chemicals, travel/leisure, railroads and refiners outperformed. Payments, large chunks of media/internet, online travel platforms, software/services, housing, pockets of capital goods and telecom underperformed.
  • VZRRCEQTStandout names: VZ, EQT and RRC
VZ reported solid results, with upside on earnings and a boost to full-year guidance, and blow-out 406K postpaid phone adds (up ~820% Y/Y and about double the consensus forecast). Telecom still underperformed as VZ sank after reporting. RRC will be purchased by EQT in an all-stock deal creating a natural gas giant worth ~$50B, with RRC holders receiving 0.987 EQT shares.
  • Iran risk and the week ahead
Away from AI the day was pretty quiet. Despite a small flurry of diplomatic activity around Iran, Brent remains very elevated, and the consensus overwhelmingly anticipates some sort of renewed bombing campaign after the US mid-terms (if not earlier). At Wednesday's FOMC decision (2pmET), policy is widely expected to stay unchanged with the door left wide open for a hike in Dec; markets already price a hike in Dec and Mar.

  • Opened higher, held all day; defensives faded
DJ Industrials +148.86 (0.29%) to 52,364, S&P 500 +53.18 (0.70%) to 7,676, Nasdaq +214.04 (0.82%) to 26,169, Russell 2000 +10.53 (0.38%) to 2,786. Technology (XLK), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Industrials (XLI) led as the AI trade bounced back after tumbling the prior few weeks on debt concerns and high rates impacts. Communications (XLC), Staples (XLP) and Healthcare (XLV) pulled back from recent 52-week highs.
  • PBRITUBBBDBrazil plunges on Lula's fourth term
Brazilian stocks plunged after Lula secured a fourth term in Sunday's runoff, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro. The result overturned market expectations of a shift toward more conservative economic policies. PBR tumbled, while banks including ITUB and BBD came under heavy selling pressure.
  • Neoclouds whipsaw on Musk's debt warning
Neocloud/data center stocks were volatile after Elon Musk warned on X that debt markets have shut off funding for AI data center operators lacking independent revenue. He predicted 'guppy-level death and consolidation' among more than 200 neoclouds. The group saw early weakness but rebounded as software stocks sold off, reversing the trade seen the last few weeks.
  • Crude dips on Saudi–Iran diplomacy; yields little changed
WTI settled at $101.76, down -$1.51 (1.46%), and Brent dipped -$0.91 (0.78%) to $115.81 after news that Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman will meet with Iran's president in Tehran to de-escalate tensions. December gold rose +$30.50 to settle at $4,038.40. The 10-year yield was last down 1bps at 4.978%, and the $69 billion 2-year Treasury auction came in soft.
  • RRCSGRYCARTDeal flow: EQT/RRC, SGRY, CART
EQT said it would acquire RRC in an all-stock deal valued at more than $50 billion, with Range shareholders receiving 0.987 EQT shares per share. SGRY surged on a take-private for $5.7B at $23.50 per share, a 49% premium. CART popped late and DASH fell after the WSJ reported DoorDash is in advanced talks to acquire Instacart.
▶Context & Source Read
·V.K. Vital reads the day as relief about capital: Anthropic's S1, Meta's ~$100B raise and SpaceX's $40B chip financing show plenty of capital is still available to AI, so spending should stay very elevated.
·V.K. The bear case is competition and crowding-out. A huge Meta issue could limit others (like Anthropic) from raising equity, and the S1 warned of rapid model releases that keep training costs high.
·H.S. Hammerstone frames the session as a rotation from defensives into tech: XLC, XLP and XLV fell back from 52-week highs, while neocloud names reversed early weakness as software sold off.
·V.K. Geopolitics is the asymmetric swing. Consensus expects renewed strikes on Iran, so any agreement could bring a very significant reaction, with oil plunging and stocks climbing.
·H.S. Hammerstone flags a catalyst-heavy week (FOMC Wednesday, GDP and core PCE late in the week, ECB and BOJ meetings), with gold likely choppy into the Fed.

U.S. stocks climbed Monday after two straight losses as semiconductors pulled the market back toward its highs: the S&P 500 closed at 7,676.77, up 0.7%, the Dow added 0.3% to 52,361.58, QQQ gained 1.1% and IWM rose 0.4%. Seven of 11 sectors finished green, with Technology leading at +1.7% and Communication Services lagging at -1.6%; AP reported Nvidia provided the strongest lift as investors returned to AI stocks.
  • ANTAfter The Bell: Anthropic Opens the IPO Books
Anthropic filed for an IPO Monday and plans to list on Nasdaq, with first-half revenue up 1,300% to $16.3B, an $80.7B net loss ($72.4B of it from financing-related accounting adjustments), a $693M operating loss and $131.7B in cash and short-term investments. It is committed to pay Google $114.5B, Amazon $110B and Microsoft $44.9B over the next several years, plus over $161.2B in rent on separate Broadcom equipment leases. The founders keep 50.1% of general shareholder voting power, and a separate 'mission trust' chooses 4 of 7 board directors.
  • METASPCXCRWVAI Financing: Big Tech Finds $135B, Neoclouds Split
Meta and SpaceX laid out routes to as much as $135B for AI hardware: $95B of current and potential stock sales from Meta plus SpaceX's roughly $40B GPU finance lease. META fell 1.9% and SPCX slipped 0.4%, while neoclouds split hard: CRWV gained 1.8% and IREN rose 2.1%, but NBIS lost 3.4% and APLD fell 2.3%.
  • CARTDASHDoorDash Nears a $17B Instacart Deal
Reuters cited The Information saying DoorDash and Instacart were nearing a $17B deal, though nothing is signed yet. CART jumped 7.8% to $60.86 on 30.1M shares, while DASH fell 6.1% to $168.40 as traders sized up the purchase price and the regulatory bill.
  • EWZXPMacro: Lula's Win Routs Brazilian Assets
Brazilian President Lula won reelection Sunday with 51.79% of valid votes, and investors dumped nearly everything with a Brazilian address on fears of more government spending, wider deficits and another inflation fight. The EWZ Brazil ETF fell 19.4% late Monday, brokerage XP crashed 47.7%, Petrobras dropped about 15%, Ambev lost roughly 16%, and the Brazilian real weakened 9% against the dollar.
  • CLSWHRLITEPops & Drops: Stocktwits Trending
Celestica jumped 16.8% after hours after Q3 adjusted EPS of $3.30 beat $2.99 estimates, revenue rose 83% to $5.83B and management raised its outlook. Whirlpool sank 8.6% after hours after losing $0.21 per share instead of earning $0.73 and cutting 2026 revenue guidance to $14.5B. Lumentum surged 8.2% as optical-networking stocks rebounded and StoneX started coverage at Buy with a $1,200 target.
▶Context & Source Read
·RIP Funding access is now the dividing line in AI: deep-pocketed buyers like Meta and SpaceX can raise money, while neoclouds face a financing window the RIP says is closing before the chip bill does. Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom may buy up to $5B of Meta's offering.
·Anthropic's S-1 pairs explosive growth with huge long-dated compute IOUs and founder/trust control. Public buyers get economic ownership with little voting power, the same pattern seen in the Facebook 2012 and SpaceX June IPOs.
·RIP Brazil's selloff priced the presidency first and the congressional guardrails second. A right-leaning Congress could limit spending, UBS said assets could move back toward pre-first-round levels, and the central bank enters next week's meeting with rates at 13.75%.
·Part of the CART takeover premium was already in the price after Friday's 9% rally. Stocktwits bulls see room for a bidding war, while bears flag deal-collapse and antitrust risk.

Tech-led rally: Anthropic's S-1 and new AI financing lifted QQQ +1.28% ahead of SPY +0.75% and IWM +0.45%, while Brazil crashed after Lula won a fourth term.
  • The AI trade bounced back after falling for weeks. Anthropic's S-1 keeps its IPO on track for before Thanksgiving, and Meta's $95B equity raise plus SpaceX's $40B GPU leasing deal with Apollo lifted pick-and-shovel names. Leadership stayed narrow, and the funding is increasingly coming from new shares and debt rather than cash flow.
  • Brazilian stocks plunged after Lula won a fourth term (XP -48.4%, ITUB -20.4%, PBR -14%). Deals drove the biggest single-stock gains: EQT is buying RRC, Surgery Partners agreed to a take-private, and DoorDash is reportedly in talks to buy Instacart. Defensives and telecom lagged.
